An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern TD, today officially opened a new €40million educational development at the Marino Institute of Education (MIE), located off Griffith Avenue. Comprising a mix of state of the art student accommodation, educational and sports facilities, the ‘Centenary Buildings’ mark a significant step in the evolution of MIE from its teacher training origins dating back 100 years. Located alongside existing educational and conference facilities at the MIE Campus, the new 135,000 sq ft. development includes: Education: 5 no. fully equipped lecture theatres and seminar rooms ranging from (50 capacity to 160 capacity); Sport: a large multi-purpose sports hall designed for teaching student teachers PE. The hall can also cater for up to 600 persons for meetings, graduations, exams and other events; Accommodation: o Student accommodation comprising 75 self contained purpose designed student apartments – accommodating 302 students of MIE and other third level institutions including DCU, DIT and Mater Dei o Community residence for the local Christian Brothers. This replaces the previous residence that was removed to facilitate the new development Catering: new kitchens, stores and a full service restaurant and a common room for use by students, conference delegates and staff Sister Bernadette Mac Mahon, Chair of the Governing Body, MIE, said, “The Centenary Buildings are part of a larger vision for the MIE to equip the campus to deliver the highest standards in education and in research across teacher education and adult learning. It will also benefit the wider community as well as businesses who may wish to avail of our sports and conference facilities’’. Dermod Dwyer, Chairman of the Development Committee continued, “The completion of the ‘Centenary Buildings’ is the culmination of five years of effort and planning by members of the Development Committee, Governing Body and all stakeholders. Through their voluntary efforts and imagination this €40m project has been meticulously completed to time and budget with private sector funding. The results are new modern facilities which are designed to be fit-for-purpose, fit-for-place, fit-for-people, and fit-for-posterity in MIE.” The development programme at MIE’s 29 acres campus continues apace, with a further €1million development, comprising a new reception, administration area and conference rooms due to open in the first quarter of 2007.
